No one wants their sleep disrupted by their pup constantly! If you’ve gotten a new puppy recently you’re probably trying to figure out all the tips and tricks to get them to sleep through the night. Surprisingly, this is a skill that needs to be taught to your pup! Within this article, we’ve put together some awesome tips and tricks for getting your pup to easily sleep through the night.
Tire Them Out
Just like us humans, puppies will have a better night’s sleep after they’ve had some exercise. So try to make sure your pup gets moving at some point throughout the day. You can take them on long walks, play games, play with toys, etc. whatever gets your pup moving! All this activity will tire them out allowing them to sleep better and longer. This will also train your pup to understand the difference between playtime and when it’s time to relax.
Create a Bedtime Routine
Creating routines for your pup is key when training them in anything, especially sleeping. Bedtime is a great time to establish a routine so that they know it’s time to wind down and sleep. Establishing a bedtime routine for your pup is similar to establishing a bedtime routine for a child. You might not be reading your pup a story before bed but you can do some of the same things including taking them out for one last potty break or even brushing their teeth. When you’re getting ready to put your pup to sleep you should also dim the lights and put on some soft music so they can start recognizing that it’s time to wind down.
Create A Comfortable Sleeping Area
Before even bringing your pup home you should have their bed/sleeping area all set up. By giving them their own sleeping/relaxing space right off the bat they won’t be as tempted to jump in your bed to rest. While you might not mind your pup sleeping in your bed at first, you’ll likely not want that to turn into a habit. Make sure your pup’s sleeping area is cozy and inviting as that will encourage them to stay there throughout the night.
Ignore Them
While we know you don’t want to ignore your pup, it’s sometimes necessary in order to teach them! Don’t give into them whining during the night unless it’s to use the bathroom. Dogs love attention and learn very quickly how to get it so if you comfort them every time they whine they’ll continue to do it.
