Does your dog have an insane amount of energy that you sometimes don’t know how to handle, especially when you’re out on walks? This is very common as we often see dogs sometimes walking themselves and pulling their owner along with them. If this is happening with your pup we have some answers for you! Take a look at our tips for walking your extremely energetic dogs.
Walk at a Brisk Pace
If you walk at a brisk pace your dog will get less distracted on your walk. Dogs have a very sensitive nose which causes them to often stop and sniff around. By keeping up the pace your dog will not stop and smell everything they come in contact with.
Don’t Reward Bad Behavior
Dogs will often try to walk faster and pull on their leash when they want to go sniff or look at something. It’s important to not condone this behavior because if you keep letting it happen it simply will keep happening. Every time your dog tries to pull on their leash simply stop walking and wait for your dog to walk back to your side. This will teach your pup that they cannot pull and try to go off.
Use a Short and Tense Leash
If you have a longer leash that does not have a lot of tension on it, it is likely that your dog will begin to wander and sniff around wherever they want. By having a shorter leash with more tension you’ll be able to keep your pup by your side and help them not get distracted. However, it’s important to not have the leash too tight obviously for your dog’s safety.
Walk Your Dog With Other Dogs
Dogs often can’t walk by other dogs without barking or going a little crazy. If this is the case with your dog, try going on walks with other dogs and owners that you know. Giving your dog a friend to walk with can help teach them to remain calm when other dogs are present.
Go For Walks Regularly
Practice makes perfect, right? If you take your dog on walks often your dog will have more time to practice behaving properly. They will also be able to get rid of their excess energy more often as well. Taking your dog for a walk every day will make your dog happier and calmer.
