One of the most important skills that a dog could learn is to come when called. A reliable recall is not an easy thing to accomplish because of the challenges that the learning process can bring. An animal is not the easiest thing to keep attentive because the world is an interesting place. To be able to respond to a call, your dog has to be willing to ignore interesting smells and colors, other dogs, and food. You will have a tall order that will require you to bring a bit of fun to build a reliable recall, convincing your dog that it’s fun to be close to you. How do you get your dog to come when you call?
Establish a Recall Word That Mean Come the First Time
You want to come up with a word that means “come” every time, starting the first time our dog hears it. A one-syllable word, such as “Here” and “Now” are popular words to use, but you can get creative and come up with your own word. The key is getting your entire family on board with the selected word and being consistent with its use. Refrain from using the dog’s name as the recall word since it may only work to get their attention, but doesn’t instruct it on what to do per se.
Ensure Your Dog Comes All the Way to You
When you call your dog using your selected word, ensure that it comes all the way to you. Consistent use of the “come” word does more than just get your dog’s attention, it gets the dog to respond in the desired manner. It’s crucial that when called, your dog comes all the way to you, and not when it feels like it. Don’t get in the habit of rewarding your dog for coming part of the way when the command means “come all the way.” The command should be reinforced, but practice teaching your dog to come by calling it by name once and the chosen command once.
Stick With High-value Rewards For Positive Reinforcement
Reinforcement is a necessary part of dog training when teaching it commands. Start off with the use of high-value treats that’s not an everyday reward for your dog. Think of it as a motivational incentive that could include treats like hot-dog bites, jerky, or string cheese. Each time you command your dog to come and it does so all the way, give it a reward. Begin Command Practice Indoors First
Don’t expect your dog to latch on to the command or be obedient overnight. It will take time, patience, and consistency. Establishing a reliable recall indoors at home is a great way to ensure that it’s also achieved outdoors at the dog park. Take a gradual approach to establish a reliable recall. Make an attempt to have a 100% reliable recall indoors before moving outdoors where there is a greater degree of distractions.
